The architecture comprises an organic reinforced concrete named “Light Lake” at its core and a geometric wooden structure named “Wood Belt” surrounding it.
The appearance is reminiscent of “a lake in the forest”, the original Finnish landscape.”Inner city waterfront trail” that circles the center of Helsinki and a walkway that surrounds the South Harbour are connected to “Wood Belt”, which contains most of the museum functions.
There is a buffer zone inside and outside the building on the periphery of “Wood Belt.” This zone has a small space called “Truss curtain,” which is made up of three-dimensional wooden trusses. “Truss curtain” connects and separates the inside and outside like a curtain. These small spaces can be used for a variety of purposes, such as showcases for displaying the works of citizens and visitors, personal booths in libraries and cafes, and meeting corners in offices.
